It won't be legal because it was an OEM version for that laptop. Also XP is going to be a dead duck soon. Vista has had enough fixes to make it stable enough to use, she's better sticking with that, than having a version that Microsoft will recognise as illegal and not update.
right click on the desktop and click "properties" then click on the "Settings" tab at the top of the window. Next you would adjust the resolution using the little slider bar. you might play with it a little to get it to where you like. Hope this helps!
